New Book

DRECKSARBEIT (Dirt work).
This book takes a deep look into the soil. We have used our scanning electron microscope to explore life underground. And the soil is so full of life that we could easily fill a book with the pictures. Unfortunately, this book is currently only available in German. We hope to find a publisher for an English edition. Dieses Buch blickt tief in den Boden. Mit unserem Raster-Elektronen-Mikroskop haben wir uns das Leben unter der Erde ganz genau angeschaut. Und der Boden ist so voll von Leben, dass wir mit den Bildern problemlos ein Buch füllen konnten.

April 2025: Lung

The April Image shows a Lung Alveoli
A look into a single alveoli shows the dense network of capillaries with the erythrocytes flowing through them (red). The diameter of the alveoli depends on the state of expansion and varies between 50 and 250 μm during inhalation and exhalation. The fine walls of the vessels make a rapid exchange of CO2 and oxygen in the alveoli possible. Scanning electron microscope, magnification 1800:1 (when 15 cms wide)

Unser April-Bild zeigt ein Lungenbläschen
Der Blick in ein einzelnes Lungenblässchen zeigt das dichte Netz aus Kapillaren mit den darin fliessenden Erythrozyten (rot). Der Durchmesser der Lungenbläschen ist abhängig vom Entfaltungszustand und schwankt in Einatmung und Ausatmung zwischen 50 und 250 μm. Aufgrund der feinsten Wandungen der Gefässe ist ein schneller Austausch von CO2 und Sauerstoff in den Alveolen möglich. Raster-Elektronenmikroskop, Vergrösserung 1800:1 (bei 15 cm Breite)

Die „Photo Society“, eine Gemeinschaft von National Geographic-Fotografen hat in Zusammenarbeit mit MAGNUM Bilder ihrer Mitglieder ausgewählt und daraus quadratische Abzüge -square prints- zum Verkauf erstellt. Wir sind stolz, mit unserem Bild des Schleimpilzes „Badhamia utricularis“ dabei zu sein. Am 22. Oktober wird es eine Online-Präsentation geben: hier geht es zur Anmeldung!

We are now members of "The Photo Society"

After the publication of our "Forest Soil" story in National Geographic, we were invited to join the "Photo Society". This society brings together all photographers who published large photo features in this magazine. We are proud to be part of this exclusive community of photographers. Of course, our scanning electron microscopic images set special accents among the many other animal and nature images.

Wir sind jetzt Mitglied in "The Photo Society"

Nach der Veröffentlichung unserer "Waldboden" Geschichte in National Geographic wurden wir eingeladen, der "Photo Society" beizutreten. Diese versammelt alle Fotografen, die grosse Bildgeschichten in diesem Magazin veröffentlichen durften. Wir sind stolz darauf, Teil dieser exklusiven Gemeinschaft von Fotografen geworden zu sein. Unsere Raster-Elektronenmikroskopischen Aufnahmen setzen zwischen den vielen anderen Tier- und Naturaufnahmen natürlich besondere Akzente.

Artistic Collage

Damon Mohl, filmmaker and professor at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana, created this collage of a surreal landscape from dozens of our microscopic images. The original file is 10,500x 4400 pixels (130MB), we had to downsize it for displaying it online. Damon Mohl plans to bring the whole thing to life in a 2D Collage Animation, as he has already done in a project with historical animal drawings. We are proud to offer a link to one of his films: "The Driver". You get access to the full movie with the password: ocean. Amazing, isn't it?

Damon Mohl, Filmemacher und Professor am Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana baute aus dutzenden unserer mikroskopischen Bilder die Collage einer surrealen Landschaft. Die Originaldatei ist 10.500x 4400 Pixel gross (130MB), wir mussten sie für die Online-Darstellung verkleinern. Damon Mohl plant, das ganze in einer 2D Collagen-Animation zum Leben zu erwecken, wie er das schon bei einem Projekt mit historischen Tierzeichnungen umgesetzt hat. Wir freuen uns sehr, dass wir hier den Film "The Driver" in voller Länge verlinken dürfen. Das Passwort dazu ist ocean.
